Book Review: The Prison Healer

Rating: 4 Stars

The story takes place in a notorious death prison following our MC Kiva as she works as a healer in the prison, doing her best to stay alive. All of this is disrupted by the arrival of the supposed rebel queen.

It was such an interesting setting, I always love prison-type snapshots but a full book set in prison was a story I was very interested in! And it did not disappoint. I loved the concept and the author definitely makes the world feel very real and tangible even though we only see the inside of the prison.

The setting was well written and well developed, making me very invested in the dangers of the prison and the survival of the main group of characters. I really enjoyed the different dynamics of the characters as they each brought something different to the story and the side characters really brought more lightness and humour to an otherwise intense and dark story. There were several big twists and reveals throughout - I guessed at one of the reveals early on but this just made me more excited to see when it would be revealed as well as when we’d find out information as to why.

I liked the characters, and I didn’t love our MC kiva as much as some of the others as I found some of her decisions didn’t make that much sense to me however in the end it all came together! The ending really made me look back and evaluate everything.

The trials were amazing and once it was clear they were just a death sentence I was just as worried for Kiva as the character was, always wondering how she would get through it and what would happen next! These really kept me immersed and looking forward to the next trial, as well as kept me wondering how everything would ultimately play out.

Overall, I loved the side characters and found that the mystery and the trials really pulled us throughout the story. I think the next book will be even better and that this one set up a lot and gave us all the background we needed on kiva and her life. I’m excited to see where the story goes.

Seventeen-year-old Kiva Meridan has spent the last ten years fighting for survival in the notorious death prison, Zalindov, working as the prison healer. When the Rebel Queen is captured, Kiva is charged with keeping the terminally ill woman alive long enough for her to undergo the Trial by Ordeal: a series of elemental challenges against the torments of air, fire, water, and earth, assigned to only the most dangerous of criminals. Then a coded message from Kiva’s family arrives, containing a single order: “Don’t let her die. We are coming.” Aware that the Trials will kill the sickly queen, Kiva risks her own life to volunteer in her place. If she succeeds, both she and the queen will be granted their freedom. But no one has ever survived. With an incurable plague sweeping Zalindov, a mysterious new inmate fighting for Kiva’s heart, and a prison rebellion brewing, Kiva can’t escape the terrible feeling that her trials have only just begun.
